NZ vs European Fire Resistance Standards:

Fire resistance is a critical aspect of building construction, essential for ensuring the

safety and integrity of structures in the event of a fire. It measures a material's ability to

withstand the effects of fire and to prevent or slow down the passage of flames, smoke,

and excessive heat. This property is evaluated through rigorous testing of various

building components such as roofs, walls, columns, ceilings, floors, and doors.

European Standards:

In Europe, fire resistance standards are defined under EN 13501, which categorizes

building structures based on their ability to withstand fire using methods like (R)EI.

These methods assess both load-bearing (R) and non-load-bearing (EI) systems. Here’s

what each component of the classification means:

-R (Resistance to collapse): This indicates the load-bearing capacity of the

element and its ability to maintain structural stability during a fire.

- E (Resistance to fire penetration): This refers to the integrity of the element,

measuring its ability to contain flames and prevent the passage of fire to other

areas.

- I (Resistance to heat transfer): This measures the insulation ability of the

element, determining how well it can limit the transfer of excessive heat during a

fire.

For example, an element that meets all these criteria for 30 minutes would be classified

as "REI 30". Apart from these, European standards also include categories like Radiation

Control (W), Mechanical Resistance (M), Self-Closure (C), Smoke Leakage (S), and Fire

Protection (K), ensuring comprehensive evaluation of fire safety features in buildings.

New Zealand Standards:

In New Zealand, fire resistance is regulated by the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC),

which outlines specific requirements for passive fire protection systems. The fire

resistance of building elements is determined through testing according to standards

like NZS/BS 476.20:1987.

The fire resistance rating (FRR) in New Zealand is expressed as a series of numbers (e.g.,

60/60/60), each indicating the number of minutes the element can withstand fire under

specific conditions:

- Structural adequacy/stability: This refers to the ability of load-bearing

elements like walls and floors to support a load during a fire. For example, a

rating of 60 means the element can maintain structural stability for 60 minutes.

- Integrity: This measures the ability of an element to prevent the passage of

flames and hot gases to the non-fire side or other parts of the building during a

fire.

- Insulation: This assesses how well the element can limit the temperature rise on

the non-fire side during a fire.

For instance, a wall with an FRR of 60/60/60 can withstand fire for 60 minutes in terms

of structural stability, integrity, and insulation. For non-load-bearing elements like

doors, the focus is on integrity (E) and insulation (I).

An example rating for a fire door

might be "-/120/30", indicating it can maintain integrity for 120 minutes and restrict temperature rise for 30 minutes.

In addition to these core criteria, New Zealand standards also address specific

requirements for smoke control doors, denoted by adding "SM" to the FRR (e.g., "-

/60/30 SM"), necessitating features like smoke seals to comply with smoke control

regulations.

Both European and New Zealand standards aim to ensure that buildings are equipped

to resist fire effectively, providing occupants with crucial time for evacuation and

minimizing damage to property. These standards undergo continuous refinement and

updating to incorporate advancements in fire safety technology and understanding.

What Are Tilt Garage Doors? The Complete Guide To Buying A Tilt Garage Door

Tilt doors may be as old as time, but they remain one of the most common garage doors in New Zealand. This is because they don't require too much headroom compared to other standard door types. In this guide, you'll learn:

  • How tilt garage door works,
  • The pros and cons of tilt garage doors,
  • The costs of tilt doors
  • How to maintain tilt garage doors
  • What you need to know before buying a tilt garage door.

Sounds like fun? Let's get started!

What Is A Tilt Garage Door?

A tilt garage door (or up and over door) is made of a large single metal or wooden panel. Compared to sectional doors, this garage door moves by two large hinge springs on both sides.

Tilt doors come in two forms: Canopy (manual) and retractable (automatic) tilt garage doors.

How Does It Work?

The canopy doors have a pivoting hinge mechanism that tilts the door into the garage. When fully opened, about one-third of the panel protrudes out of the garage. The remaining part sits parallel to the garage ceiling. This type of door is ideal for garages with limited floor area since most of the door is usually outside.

As earlier mentioned, the canopy tilt door operates manually. The torsion spring, coupled with additional cables on both sides of the door, makes it easy to use without strain.

Furthermore, canopy doors have a two-point locking mechanism that prevents intruders from accessing your garage. Some manufacturers include an anti-drop device that prevents the door from tumbling down in case of spring or cable failure.

Although, the canopy tilt door has its downsides. Unlike sectional or roll-up doors, you can't park your car up close to the door. This is because it protrudes out of the garage when in motion. Aside from this, they are affordable, easy to install and require less maintenance.

Retractable doors are more common since they are automated. Instead of protruding from the door frame, the panel retracts and sits on a supporting rail that runs back into the garage. So this is perfect if you have a larger floor area in your garage.

The retractable door opens with the help of retractable gear and springs installed on both sides of the door. This lifts the door slowly into the track rail installed below the garage ceiling.

Some products have a secure locking mechanism at the base of the door that prevents unauthorised entry. Also, if the door gets jammed and you cannot open it, it has a manual release mechanism.

Why Choose A Tilt Door?

Tilt garage doors are suitable for garages with limited headroom, such as basement, ideal and skyline garages. Moreso, it fits perfectly where other garage doors don’t.

Advantages Of Tilt Garage Doors

They Are Usually Inexpensive.

Tilt garage doors cost less than other standard door types. If you have a reasonable budget, you can consider buying a tilt door for your home.

Retractable tilt doors, however, may have additional costs such as garage door opener, installation kits, etc. But, you won’t be breaking the bank to purchase any.

Easy To Use

Another fantastic benefit of tilt doors is convenience. These doors are made of light but robust materials such as wood or aluminium.

Also, since it's a single panel, lifting the door isn't strenuous and can be done manually. So you don’t have to spend time and energy operating the door.

Can Be Automated

Just like sectional doors, the tilt garage door has automation options. It's compatible with most garage door openers. However, canopy tilt doors are not automated. So if you want this feature, the retractable tilt door is the way to go.

Has Diverse Customisable Options

Both canopy and retractable tilt garage doors have a variety of designs. Either wood or steel, you surely will find the best match for your home style.

Drawbacks Of Tilt Garage Doors

Security Can Become Concerning

Most products aren’t solid, which can be a problem. Also, there isn’t a bottom seal like sectional doors, so anyone with a crowbar can force a way in.

Another thing is the extension springs. Usually, the doors are hung at high tension, and the springs can become loose or rust in later years. And when this happens, they may fly out, causing a fatal accident. Proper maintenance and scheduled visits from an expert can easily prevent this from happening.

They Are Not Weather Resistant

Tilt doors fail in terms of durability. Although they are made to withstand weather conditions, the whole panel may topple in cases of extremity. And when this happens, the door may be beyond repair.

Besides, wooden designs rot faster. So, a tilt garage door isn't an option if you live in areas prone to heavy rainfall or snowfall.

May Not Befit Some Architectural Designs

Although tilt garage doors have beautiful designs, they might not complement some modern buildings. This limits how you can use the garage door in your home. Since the garage door adds value to your home, this might be a disadvantage when you plan to resell.

The Single Panel Can Become A Disadvantage

Tilt panel doors have a single panel, which can be a disadvantage. For instance, if the door gets damaged, you may need to replace the entire door, unlike sectional doors, which may require the repair of one or two sections.

Are Tilt Garage Doors Safe?

Unfortunately, tilt garage doors are less secure than sectional and roller doors. The gaps at the door edges can be an access point to burglars.

Automated tilt doors are becoming more popular since they are integrated with enhanced locking systems. The panels are also fitted with anti-lift sensors that prevent intruders from breaking into your garage when you're gone.

However, steel or aluminium doors can provide extra security. They have innate strength that can resist a good beating. Using add-on accessories such as motorised garage doors, motion sensors, detector lights, etc., can also enhance the security of your garage.

Can You Automate Tilt Garage Doors?

Usually, retractable tilt garage doors are automated. They work with almost all electric garage door openers. But canopy tilt garage doors are manual. But, some garage door openers enable manual garage doors to be transformed into automatic control.

A perfect example is Tiltmaster, from Merlin. It works for old and newer versions of tilt doors. The garage opener also offers high-level security features and a wholesome solution to automating your tilt garage door.

Where Can You Buy Tilt Garage Doors?

You can buy tilt garage doors from Glideaway Garage Door Solutions. The doors are available in various bespoke sizes and designs tailored to your needs. With over 35 years in the New Zealand door industry, you can be confident of getting high-quality and long-lasting products for your building, whether residential, commercial or industrial door systems.

How Much Does A Tilt Garage Door Cost?

The cliche you get what you pay for garage doors cannot be more correct. Typically, a tilt garage door is affordable. But it depends on the manufacturer, the size of your garage and your preferences.

What type of finish would you prefer? What is the size of your garage space? How much clearance do you have in your garage? All these are potential questions that your provider may ask before giving you a quote. Garage door accessories like auto locks or external keypads may also increase the costs.

But from our research, the starting price of a tilt garage door is $1700. Installing your garage door professionally also attracts extra fees. However, this price depends on the manufacturer and your preferences. Contact Glideaway Doors for a free quote.

What Sizes Do Roller Doors Come In?

The standard space requirements for tilt doors are:

  • Height: 2.0m - 2.4m
  • Width: 2.4m - 4.80m
  • Backspace: 500mm+
  • Sideroom: 90mm for manual doors
  • Headroom: 800mm for manual doors and 120mm for automatic doors

The standard sizes for tilt doors are listed above, but you can customise them for your garage opening.

Do Tilt Garage Doors Require Much Maintenance?

No, tilt garage doors do not require much maintenance since they have fewer components than sectional doors.

How Do You Maintain A Tilt Garage Door?

Alt text: How do you maintain a tilt garage door?

  • Use a dish-washing liquid, warm water and a damp cloth to clean the panel. Avoid getting water into the garage door opener to avoid electrocution or damage.
  • Instead, clean them with methylated spirits. Don't use lubricants on your guide tracks!
  • Call in a professional once every year to check for any damage. This will prevent the possibility of unfortunate accidents.
  • Lubricate the steel hinges with machine oil. Use a Chain Lube on the opener chain and springs.

Tip: Repeat this once in three months.

  • Don't use a pressure washer to remove dirt or soap left over after cleaning. Instead, use water, soap and a soft sponge to remove the remnants. This may be time-consuming but prevents unnecessary damage to your garage door.

What Do You Need To Know Before Purchasing A Tilt Garage Door?

Alt text: What do you need to know before purchasing a tilt garage door?

Clearance

The clearance is the space the garage door takes when it is opened or closed. For tilt doors, this depends on the size and weight of the door. If you consider a larger door, like a double-skinned one, you could lose up to 150mm of daylight opening. So you need to consider this before buying a tilt door.

Materials

Tilt doors can be clad in steel, aluminium, cedar, plywood, or even Zincalume. Steel doors are the strongest but are not suitable for areas close to the sea. This is because salt water can erode the surface, making it lose colour and style. But they are best for wind-prone areas as they are wind resistant.

Powder Coated aluminium resists corrosion and is best suited to corrosion-prone areas. Fibreglass is perfect for extreme climates with high and low temperatures. It has excellent insulating properties and helps to keep your garage at an even temperature.

Colour Matching

If your garage is the focal point of your home, then you must carefully select the colours. Most people prefer to match the door with the window or entire design.

But there are a variety of colours for you to choose from. Wood tends to be a more personalised option, as it can fit any modern or traditional design.

Automation

Tilt doors can be automated, but they are not compatible with all garage door openers. If you choose to automate your current door, you can opt for Tiltmaster by Merlin MyQ. It has add-on accessories like a wireless wall button to enhance security and convenience. This is specifically made for tilt doors. But if you're in the market for a new door, you can buy retractable tilt doors.

Quality

The quality of your tilt garage door largely depends on the manufacturer. We advise that you buy from authentic sources with positive customer reviews. Check out the previous works and years of experience in manufacturing or supplying garage doors.

Conclusion

Tilt-up doors may be old-fashioned, but they have unique features. Do you want to buy a tilt garage door in New Zealand? You're in the right place!

The Glideaway garage door provides solutions to all your door needs. Contact our door specialists today to know the tilt door that suits your needs.

What Is A Sectional Garage Door? All Your Questions Answered

The garage door is probably the easiest way to break into your home. Well-chosen, it can protect your valuables and highlight the aesthetics of your facility. And if poorly chosen, it can be an eyesore.

Sectional doors are remarkably one of the best–or maybe the best–garage doors in the market. Perhaps, people prefer them because of their sturdy structure, reliability, and flexibility. But that's not all. Sectional doors come in varying designs and can be coated in any colour. This makes it suitable for any type of architectural design.

In this guide, you'll learn everything you need to know before buying a sectional garage door for your home. Let's get right to it!

What are Sectional Garage Doors?

Sectional garage doors comprise more than three panels, where each panel is hinged to the next. These doors enable you to maximise space in and out of the garage. They can be single or double–fitted with insulating foam.

You'll find sectional doors in all materials, including aluminium, iron, steel, or wood. What's more intriguing is that it fits into any garage space.

How Do They Work?

Sectional garage doors have about 4 - 8 horizontal panels (or sections) connected by hinges. Each panel moves vertically upwards into the guide rails mounted millimetres below the ceiling.

The panels are about 50 mm thick, hinged together and attached to the inside tracks of the garage door frame. The hinges cause the doors to bend as it moves up.

There are cable drums on both ends of the tracks. When the door is opened, the cable winds around the drum, pulling the door up. The reverse happens when it is closed.

The torsion springs on the barrel support the weight of the doors to prevent them from falling out when in motion. So if you notice that the door speed is faster than normal, you may want to examine the springs.

Are Sectional Garage Doors Secure?

Absolutely! Sectional doors are secure, and most homeowners would rather invest in having one in their garage. Single and double sectional doors generally come with a locking mechanism, which prevents them from being jerked up or pushed open by intruders. The double sectional door is even stronger and provides more security.

What Are The Benefits Of A Sectional Garage Door

A Sectional garage door has several features that distinguish it from other garage doors. Here are the major advantages of sectional doors.

Helps To Save Space

A sectional door is the best way to go if space is minimal. It doesn't swing out like tilt doors. Instead,  it moves vertically up when opened and horizontally into the guide track installed in the garage headroom.

You can also include a pedestrian door (or wicket door)--a much more accessible way to your garage.

Provides Insulation Against Heat

Usually, the garage is the largest room in your home. Therefore, keeping it insulated against weather elements is essential. An insulated garage door can help regulate the temperature in your garage and home. In addition, it absorbs noise, creating a quieter environment.

The double garage door has an insulating foam between its panels. This forms a solid layer of insulation, which traps energy. Plus, sectional doors are sidelined with rubber seals, protecting your garage from rain, dust, debris, or dirt.

Although, sectional garage doors have different types. For instance, single sectional doors don’t contain insulating foam. If you want this installed, ensure you specify before making a purchase.

But even without the insulated panels, the single sectional doors offer minimum insulation, as they are made with heat-resistant materials such as iron or steel. So if you experience heat frequently, you can opt for the single sectional garage door.

Easily Customisable

Your home reflects your personality. Your garage door is essential and should complement the rest of your home.

As highlighted above, sectional doors have a variety of designs, finishes and colours for you to choose from. The diversity makes it a perfect blend for any architectural decor.

Another exciting feature is that it fits perfectly in any garage opening. This is vital in case you want to change your current garage door. But consider hiring a professional garage door company that can install it correctly.

Highly Durable And Reliable

Durability is an essential factor to look out for when purchasing a garage door for your home. Sectional garage doors, especially the ones made from aluminium and steel, are highly durable. If properly maintained, they can last up to 30 years.

Best For Security

Your garage door serves as an entry point to your home. This is why you need to invest in a highly secure system to protect your valuables and family when you're in or out.

The sectional door panels are tightly hinged, and getting a finger between them is impossible. The top panel is secured by a mechanical lock, making it hard to push it in.

So if you stay in areas prone to intruders, you can be assured that your home is safe. But what happens when something gets underneath the door? It retracts without causing any damage.

What Are The Drawbacks Of A Sectional Garage Door

Of course, sectional garage doors are not all fun and games. Some of the potential downsides that come with using them include:

Can Attract Dust

The bottom seal of the sectional garage door protects against weather elements. But dust particles may still find their way into the garage. If you're always out, it may be challenging to keep the garage clean.

May Be Quite Costly

Sectional doors have more hardware than other types of standard garage doors. When any fault arises, it will be more costly to replace. Hiring an expert repairer will attract extra costs.

Keep in mind that sectional doors boost curb appeal and offer a great return on investment. Some real estate agents prefer buying homes with sectional garage doors.

Are Sectional Doors Manual?

Yes! Sectional doors are manual and can be operated without a remote. They can also be automated, which is a better option to exercise control over activities in your garage.

Are Sectional Garage Doors Insulated?

Yes, sectional doors have fantastic insulating properties. Each panel is fitted with polystyrene or polyurethane foams 50mm thick.

For example, insulated sectional doors will be most beneficial if you live in areas where the temperature change is constant. Or, if you use your garage as an office or store, double sectional garage doors are a fantastic option to protect your property.

Suppose you don't want a insulated door, no worries! Uninsulated sectional garage doors with steel or aluminium panels can also suffice as an insulator for your garage.

What Sizes Do Sectional Garage Doors Come In?

Sectional garage doors come in a variety of standard options. Most companies use metric measurements. However, you can contact your garage door provider if you want a custom design.

  • A single sectional garage door can be 2200mm in height and 2400mm in width.
  • The standard height for a double sectional garage door is 2200mm, while the width is 5000mm.
  • Maximum sectional garage doors can be up to 3400mm high and 6400mm wide.

How Much Does A Sectional Garage Door Cost?

The price of sectional garage doors varies, depending on the style or finish. This explains why the quotes differ on the internet. Quality sectional garage doors can be as low as $900.  Glideaway garage door provides an overview of the pricing (this list excludes installation fees or kits)

  • Single Colour Steel sectional door             $1500 - $3000
  • Double Colour Steel sectional door            $2500 – $5000
  • Single cedar clad sectional door                  $4000 – $8000
  • Double cedar clad sectional door                $8000 - $12000

Does The Sectional Garage Door Need Much Maintenance?

No, sectional garage doors manufactured with quality materials don't require much maintenance. But, just like any other mechanical product, you can clean it regularly to ensure optimal performance and maximise lifespan.

We also recommend that you have an expert service your sectional garage doors every year. But here are a few DIY tips to help you get started.

Inspect The Door Travels

Since sectional garage doors operate by gliding in and out, you need to examine the speed to know if it's in good condition.

You can start by running it manually to check if it opens and closes smoothly. Typically, the door should go up or down with minimal effort. But If you notice anything strange, like a restriction in one of the tracks, contact your garage door provider immediately.

Lubricate the Hardware

Applying lubricants to the garage door parts isn't technical, and you can handle it yourself. Instead of grease or oils that can attract dirt, consider buying a silicon spray. This, however, should be done once in three months or twice in six months. You can use a damp cloth and methylated spirit for the guide tracks to remove dirt.

Clean The Door Seals Regularly

Most sectional garage door bottom seals are made of rubber. You need to check them to ensure they're free from debris constantly. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth. You should wipe the contact area too.

What Is The Best Sectional Garage Door?

Steel is popular because of its durability, reliability, flexibility and design. However, all sectional doors have their unique features. For instance, double sectional doors are ideal if the garage is used to store valuables.

Uninsulated sectional doors are perfect for garages where thermal insulation isn't a priority. But consider contacting a professional to recommend the best sectional garage door for your home.

What's next?

Finding quality sectional garage doors is quite a hassle, as many counterfeit products are on the internet. But with the above tips, you can easily decipher which is suitable for your home.

Glideaway sectional doors offer a wholesome solution to all your garage door needs. We provide bespoke garage doors made with high-quality materials. Contact us to get the sectional door made perfectly for your garage.

A smartphone garage door works by utilising the sensors or wifi on your garage door rails that transmit signals to a supporting app on your smartphone, allowing you to remotely monitor activities around your garage, including when it was last opened or shut. Smart garage door openers can come in two forms:

  • Smart garage door opener system
  • Add-on accessories compatible with your motorised door opener

Smart garage door opener systems provide an all-in-one solution to access your garage door. It comprises a belt rail and a garage door motor that will fit into your garage. You will need accessories such as a wall station and a transmitter to provide optimal performance.

Usually, a smart garage door system comes with an associated app where you can remotely control your garage door. Depending on the product, it may also have additional benefits, such as providing an aerial view of your garage. In addition, some products allow you to integrate the system into your smart home.

Smart door opener add-on accessories, however, are customised to be compatible with the current motorised garage door opener in your home. This depends on the garage door motor you use. Finding the right smart add-on accessories can be a hassle.

Most smart garage door add-on accessories include a sensor and controller for your garage. The sensor will be retrofitted to your garage door. It should be placed where it can easily send signals to the associated app. More information on this should be in the manufacturer's manual.

The controller should be attached to your current garage door opener using two wires (one for the open and the other for the close command nodes.) It is vital to have a strong wifi network connection when using smart garage door add-on accessories.

Why Should I Use A Garage Door Opener?

Smart garage door openers do not only help in controlling your garage door but also in improving security. Here's how.

For improved security

Knowing that you have controlled access to the activities around your garage gives you a sense of security. With a click of a button, you can open or shut your garage doors, turn off garage lights, and lots more.

In addition, if you reside in areas prone to break-ins or love to be precautious, smart garage door openers can provide insights into the activities around your garage.

Smart Monitoring

Imagine getting a notification when your garage door is open, fascinating, right? Smart garage door openers can help you monitor your garage door at a certain distance from your home. You can see and hear visitors when they come by. Some products have speaker and microphone connections. So if you have a  scheduled visit from the repair man or a friend, you can authorise who comes in.

Can Be Handy In Emergencies

Smartphone garage door openers help you stay in control when unforeseen scenarios happen. For instance, carbon monoxide can build up in a garage and can cause severe damage to the building. Some smart garage door openers have add-on accessories like smoke detectors, which send a notification when the carbon monoxide reaches a dangerous level.

Yes, some smart garage door openers have backup batteries in case of a power outage. Plus, you can rely on remote button controls to operate your garage doors when your phone batteries are flat.

Are There Any Security Concerns With Smart Garage Door Openers?

Smartphone garage door openers are safe. Some garage door openers use advanced encryption for high-level security. But these openers are connected to third-party networks, which is susceptible to cyberattack. You can set up two-factor authentication to prevent hackers from accessing your wifi-network.

What Should I Look For Before Buying A Smart Garage Door Opener?

Your Budget

This is the first step to consider before purchasing a smart garage door opener. There are several models with varying features and integrations. You’ll definitely find one that fits your budget. We recommend using Merlin MyQ as it has holistic features for the best experience.

The Type Of Drive

Another option to consider is the material used to make your garage door. Smart openers differ in costs, as well as how they lift doors. Standard doors require 0.5 Horsepower. If you have heavier doors, you may need 0.75-1 Horsepower.

If you’re replacing an entire system or retrofitting the current one, look for a smart garage opener with an equal or higher power. You can simply check the rating of the garage door opener in your unit to know the right one to buy.

Compatibility

Not all smart garage door openers can work with motorised garage door system. You need to verify if this is the case with you or if you need to replace the garage door opener completely. You can check the compatibility on the manufacturer’s manual before making a purchase.

Smart Home Integrations

Integrating your garage door with your smart home system is another way to enjoy convenience in your home. For instance, you can automate garage lights or smart locks to react when your garage door is opened or closed. A few smart garage door openers have these features, so you may want to check for this before buying.

Conclusion

The benefits of smart garage door openers outweigh the disadvantages. You can purchase a smart garage door opener without breaking the bank and monitor activities around your home.

MAY – Garage Door Safety Month

Each year, the International Door Association (IDA) recognises Garage Door Safety Month.

Garage doors are one of the largest moving objects in your house so it is important to bring awareness to the potential dangers garage doors and automatic opener systems can cause if they’re not kept in proper working condition.

While the importance of garage door safety is something the team at Glideaway recognise all year round, we wanted to take this opportunity to share the tips below to educate and help you become familiar with the potential safety risks and how to avoid them.

1. Look and do a regular visual check-up. As you would do a periodic check-up with your car, the same goes for your garage. Each month, perform a visual inspection and look for signs of wear and tear on brackets, cables, rollers, pulleys and the door itself.

Manually open your door and lift it at mid-point. Is the left side in perfect balance with the right side? Or are they angled in some way? When you lift your garage door and stop halfway through, does it continue to go up or down? When you lift your garage door, does it feel heavy or difficult to lift? These are signs that your springs need to be either tightened or loosened more.

Additionally, look (don’t touch) at your tension springs and cables for any signs of inconsistent shapes, stress or rust. Inspect the weather seals to see if they are intact, cracked or split.

See if your brackets, track supports and fasteners are all in place and secured tightly. You can tighten any loose bolts, however be careful not to over tighten them.

2. Listen and be alert for any loud, grinding, or scratching noises when you operate your garage door. Notice if your mechanized parts have a much louder noise or weird vibrations as these usually indicate an issue.

Ensure your rollers are moving freely along the tracks without rubbing or scraping.

3. Learn and Educate your children. Most automatic garage doors come with reverse mechanisms. But they don’t work 100%of the time with small bodies like that of your kids. Set aside time to talk to your children about how they should not run underneath a closing garage door, be near the door when it is going up or down, and that they should not touch or play with any garage door parts as it is not a toy.

Without a properly installed safety reversal system, persons(particularly small children) could be seriously injured or killed by a closing garage door.

4. Remember, Let professionals do the repairs. Do not try to disassemble and replace parts or tighten springs by yourself.
Contact Glideaway to get your door serviced or repaired professionally.

What are the different garage door options?

This is a common question we get asked about what different types of garage door options are available.

Typically, there is 3 main garage door options which are suitable for almost all garage and shed types.

1-     Sectional overhead door

2-     Roller door

3-     Tilt door

We will cover off the 3 typical door types in this article these are most relevant for any garage / shed.

Sectional Overhead Doors:

The most common garage door option on the market today in New Zealand.
Basically every new home that is built is fitted with a sectional garage door.

Why this is, is because of the availability in colours, styles additional options such as insulation, safety devices, low headroom, smart phone activation etc.
also space requirements are less than say a roller type door, they also provide much better sealing from the elements.

With sectional doors these are also available is a range of sizes to fit every garage, shed or even campervan and boat sheds.
Most typical car garages have a door size of 2.4 – 3.0meters wide for a single car garage to a 4.8-6.0meter for a double garage.
Typical opening heights for a standard 2.4 or 2.55meter stud home are 2.0 – 2.2meter high.

Large size Sectional Doors such as 3.6meters high x 7.0 meters wide are achievable.

The availability of sectional overhead doors is also very accessible with a wide scope of suppliers who both manufacture doors in NZ with NZ steel and those who import product and cut and paint to size and colour when needed, made from offshore steel and can contain material which is inadequate to meet the harsh NZ conditions.

The space requirements that need to be considered with a sectional door are:

-         Headroom (minimum for standard headroom of 300mmor minimum for low headroom set up of 200mm)

-         Back space in to the room – needs to be clear back into the room the door height + 500mm to allow space for the door tracks and auto opener (if included)

-         Side-room- minimum side-room of 120mm required each side for a typical door set up.

Overall sectional doors are very common and suit basically every residential garage and shed.

Sectional Overhead Garage Door

Roller Doors:

The most common door for more economical sheds, farm buildings and garages.
Simple rolling curtain design which is very limited in the way of profile and colours.
Generally a lightweight curtain which isn’t recommended for a high wind environment.
The roller door also isn’t to good at sealing against vermons and birds.

The Roller door has one profile / style and is available in around 10-15 different colours.

The roller door is a simple economical door which does have some sizing constraints such as the headroom required to take the door roll.

Typical sizes for a roller door of 2.1-2.4meters high and2.4-3.6meters wide.
With the door construction, these doors are not recommended to be any wider than 4.00 meters.

Available in both manual locking or auto opener operation.

Space requirements required if considering a roller door are:

-         Headroom required – 450mm+

-         Side-room 90mm each side and 150mm on the motor side (if automated)

-         Back space – 500-600mm. (perfect for fitting between floor joists when in a basement garage situation.

Overall Roller Doors are a simple cost effective door system which only suits suitable garages and sheds.

Roller Garage Door

Tilt Doors:

Tilt doors were a common door system before the introduction of Sectional Doors in the late 1980’s – early 1990’s.

A simple one piece panel door which pivots of side mounted drive arms.
They are still used today in tight headroom situations where a roller door or sectional door are not able to be fitted.

Available in a range of profiles and colour finishes which gives it a step over a roller door.

There are few things that you need to be aware of with atilt door:

-         The door swinging out when opening – taking up driveway space as the car needs to be kept back from the arc of the swing of the door.

-         Reduces opening height when open- the door panel sits below the lintel height reducing your clearance

-         Perimeter gaps around the door as the door is swinging through the opening – this reduces the doors weather tightness and seal ability from vermons etc.

Space requirements to consider with a tilt door are:

-         Headroom 80mm from manual operation and 120mmwith auto opener

-         Side room 90mm minimum each side

-         Back space into the garage – the door height +500mm.

-         Reduction in opening height.

Tilt doors are also size limited due to shipping / logistics of getting the door to site.
sizes available from 2.0 – 2.4meters high and 2.4 – 4.80meters wide.

The Flexibility of the tilt door is the panel construction, these can be a steel or aluminium frame which can be clad with cladding options such as cedar, timber, Aluminium sheet panels etc.

Overall tilt doors are a simple door system which is suited for garages where headroom is a problem, such as basement garages, older version versatile, ideal and skyline garages.

Tilt Garage Door

There are also a number of other door systems for garages such as:

-         Sliding doors

-         Bi-folding doors

-         Insulated roller doors.

These products are far less common and are more project specific.

Top 10 Preventive Maintenance Tips for Your Garage Door.

Your garage door is the largest moving part in your entire home and is used multiple times per day at any hour and in all seasons. To keep your garage door operating smoothly for decades to come, it’s very important that you take the time to perform regular preventive care and maintenance. Here are 10 things that all homeowners can do:

1.Look and Listen

The most important preventive step you can take is to observe your garage door in action every time you use it. Is it moving smoothly or is it jerky in places? Does it operate silently or does it make grinding or scraping noises? Do both sides of the system (springs, pulleys and cables) look symmetrical?

2.Tighten up the Hardware

The average garage door moves up and down more than a thousand times a year. That’s a lot of movement and vibration, which can loosen the hardware. Examine and tighten all roller brackets and bolts with a socket wrench.

3.Test the Garage Door Balance

If your garage door is not properly balanced, the garage door opener will have to work harder, and it won’t last as long.

After you disconnect the opener by pulling the release handle (usually a red cord), manually move the door about halfway up. If it doesn’t stay put, the counterweight system (springs) are improperly balanced. Garage door spring adjustment is best left to the professionals. Contact your Garage Door Service agent.

4.Inspect and Replace the Rollers

The rollers, whether steel or nylon, need to be inspected twice a year and replaced every seven years or so, and even more if you use your garage door many times a day.

Worn, chipped or cracked rollers should be replaced as soon as possible. You do this by removing and reinstalling any roller brackets that are not directly attached to the cable system.

5.Replace the Weather stripping

If the rubber weather seal strip on the bottom of your door is brittle or cracked, replace it right away to keep the elements out of your house. Weather stripping is available from GDPO https://garagedoorparts.co.nz/collections/door-seals.

6.Lubricate the Moving Parts

Keeping your garage door parts greased up will add years of seamless operation to your system – and it takes just 10 minutes a year! Use white lithium grease on the opener and a spray lubricant, available from your garage door specialist, to coat the overhead springs.

7.Check the Cables

You should never tinker with the high-tension cables that lift your door because they have enough force to maim and kill. But you can check their condition so you know when to hire a pro. Check for broken strands and damage near the bottom roller bracket.

8.Test the Auto-Reverse Safety Features

There are two mechanisms: mechanical and photocell. In order to test the mechanical feature, place a piece of wood or a brick on the ground in the path of the door. When the door coming down touches that object, it should reverse direction and go back up again. To test the second, the photoelectric system with beams at each side, close your door and just pass your leg in the door’s path. Your door should reverse.

If your opener is more than 20 years old, it may lack this basic safety features – and so it’s time to buy a new garage door opener.

9.Clear the Tracks

Make sure the tracks on either side of the door are free from debris and, if you are so inclined, you can use a level to check the plumb. Any major adjustments to tracks must be done by a professional garage door technician.

10.Groom Your Garage Door

Don’t forget to examine the door itself. Wood doors will need to be checked for water damage and warp, as well as chipped and peeling paint. Recommended that wooden doors are either stained or painted once every 18-24 months. Steel doors may have rust spots that need to be sanded, primed and painted. Wash your garage door regularly with a mild all-purpose cleaner at the same time you do your car.

Remember, your garage door makes up about one-third of the exterior of your house, so keep it fresh and clean. If you don’t have time to do this kind of check-up, call a garage door professional to schedule a tune-up service call. He is going to fix all… perfectly!

If you feel your Garage Door Needs a professional to look it or is due for replacement, Contact GLIDEAWAY.

The Christmas season is prime time for thieves as everyone goes away on holiday and homes are left unattended. Protect your home from unwanted attention and theft this December.

  1. Make it look like someone’s home.

Thieves are on the lookout for homes that are unoccupied. Reduce risk by eliminating the common clues that no one is home. Put a temporary hold on your mail, or ask a neighbour to empty the letterbox. Park a car in the driveway and leave curtains open. Set lights to turn on with a timer to look like someone is in the house. Set them to turn on randomly, as lights turning on at 8pm every day no matter what could alert burglars that the house is unattended.

  1. Check all doors and locks.

Your home security is only as strong as your weakest entry point. Check that all doors and windows are locked and that locks are sturdy and secure. In particular, check back entrances, windows and garage doors.

  1. Hide valuables out of sight.

New Christmas gadgets are a strong attraction for thieves. Make sure valuables and Christmas presents are out of sight of windows and don’t advertise them on social media. Hide valuables in non-obvious places so that thieves don’t find them if they do get into your home!

  1. Don’t publish holiday plans on social media.

It’s tempting to show your holiday snaps on social media for all your friends to see. However, this tells thieves that you aren’t home – and that your home is the perfect target. Wait to post your plans until after you get home, or make sure your posts are only visible to friends you trust.

  1. Check the garage.

The garage is often a place people forget to check when they go away. Make sure your garage door is secure and not worn out – if it is, thieves may be able to pry it open. Repair broken springs or replace worn out doors. Check that all doors and windows are locked.

  1. Neighbourhood Watch

Get your neighbours to keep an eye on your home while you are away. They can report any suspicious activity and help keep your home safe.

Enjoy your Christmas Holidays!

Your guide to finding the ideal Glideaway Garage Door to suit you, providing 10 important factors to consider before you buy.

1.    DOOR TYPE

The first key aspect of choosing a new garage door is finding out which type of door best suits your needs. Garage doors typically come in three main types: tilt doors, sectional doors, and roller doors. Glideaway offers all three of these solutions, as well as other door types such as hinged doors or stacking doors. These three main types will usually be able to meet the needs of both the customer and the application of the door.

The main element that can determine which door is required is the available space. Do you have enough space for a sectional door, or do you need a tilt door? Each door type will suit a set of needs, with their own pros and cons. The final door type is purely a matter of choice. For more information about door types, check out this blog post.

2.    DESIGN & STYLE

The garage door is usually the largest opening on a house. It generally receives a lot of attention from street front viewers. The style and design of your garage door has an enormous impact on the look of your property. While roller doors come in relatively universal standard style, the variations for sectional door and tilt door solutions is impressive. When choosing a door, make sure you choose a design or style that will suit your house, and the statement you intend to make.

At Glideaway, our design and style of our sectional doors are set out in two formats:

  • Classic Series: For a classic garage door that will meet the needs of most, the Classic Series has a solution for you.
  • Designer Series: If you want to make a statement with your door – a true eye-catcher – then look no further than our Designer Series doors.

3.    MATERIAL

The material of your garage door is an extremely important factor to consider. The material you choose can have a major effect on the lifetime of your door. Additionally, factors such as weight, finishing, upkeep, and installation has an impact. For more on this, read our Door Lifetime section below.

Here at Glideaway, we believe quality garage doors deserve quality material. For our Coloursteel doors, we use 0.55mm thickness, a thicker grade than other doors found on the market. Other materials Glideaway commonly use are Zincalume (0.55mm) and aluminium. These are available in a range of thicknesses and finishes, across all profiles. Aluminium is the best material for garage doors with high exposure to the elements and looks great with a powder-coat finish.

Be aware of the long-term effect of weathering on wooden doors. Wood provides an impressive finish to your garage door. Over time though the wood panelling of almost all types of wood will cup, bow, twist, become unstuck, fade, get mouldy and a number of other unwanted disadvantages. Please keep this in mind when thinking about purchasing a wooden garage door.

4.    DOOR LIFETIME

The door lifetime is a highly important factor that can easily be overlooked initially. The material chosen (wood vs steel), the environmental conditions of the garage door and the amount of use the door receives all influence whether a door lasts 5 or 60 years. You can usually expect the lifetime of a well-maintained garage door to be 10-15 years. A quality door, such as a Glideaway ‘Duke’ profile garage door, will ordinarily always meet these expectations, and save the hassle of frequent door replacement down the line.

5.    FINISH

The finish can be influenced by aspects such as colour matching, your surrounding environment, and certain aesthetically desired fashionable designs. This is 100% up to you, though.

For metal doors, clients will generally decide the colour of their garage door by matching the colour of their front door, roofing, or windows, or occasionally as a contrast colour to the main house colour. Here at Glideaway, we can usually match the desired colour with our Coloursteel range, or our extensive powder-coat range.

If your steel or aluminium door will be located near the coast, Glideaway ALWAYS recommends a powder-coated finish to help greatly extend the life of the garage door. Houses within the salt spray zone will corrode faster due to the salt, wind, and sand, therefore powder-coated doors and hardware is the simplest option to prevent your garage door rusting quickly.

6.    INSULATION

A warm and insulated house is a legal requirement in New Zealand. As one of the largest opening in your house, an insulated garage door can prevent a large amount of heat escaping. Certain areas of New Zealand will require the insulation more than others, as shown on this link.

Glideaway has two main insulation solutions available for a standard sectional garage door, suitable for both insulation and aesthetic requirements. Insulpro Novahush insulation blankets easily fit into your garage door panels, providing an insulation R rating of 1.4, as well as strong acoustic blocking properties. Our other solution – Polystyrene fill insulation, with either a Core-flute or Zincalume backing sheet – has an R rating of 1.8, while still providing a classy finish to the back of your sectional garage door.

7.    NEW OPENER

An automatic opener that is less than 10 years old may still be working fine when you look to replace your garage door. However, Glideaway highly recommends replacing your automatic garage door opener at the same time as your garage door. Doing this ensures your door and opener will reliably operate without fault over the coming years. This saves you from having to replace your opener at a later date. Furthermore, a new opener comes with a warranty of 5-7 years, safeguarding you well into the lifetime of your garage door.

8.    INSTALLATION

Glideaway highly recommends the installation of your new garage door and/or automatic opener is completed by a competent and experienced installer. While it may be tempting to choose the cheaper option of installing the door yourself, a professionally installed garage door will ensure the safety and longevity of the door is upheld.

Guarantee your springs are tensioned correctly, all moving parts are correctly installed, the garage door accurately fits the opening, and the fixings are adequate, among other benefits by using a professional installer. Furthermore, should a fault be found on a Glideaway garage door that is installed by the customer, the warranty is liable to be voided.

9.    ACCESSORIES

Glideaway offers a wide range of customisable features and accessories for sectional and tilt garage doors. Customising your new garage door to your specifications is our speciality. Accessories include windows, available in either window inserts or a complete aluminium sash, frosted, clear, or opaque; external entry keypad, premium seals and powder-coated hardware, among others. Our smart automatic garage door openers, using the Merlin MyQ system, are becoming increasingly popular. They allow you to operate and have control over your garage door right from your phone.

Most Glideaway accessories can be retrofitted at a later date. However, when purchasing it is a great idea to consider which accessories or customisations you feel will best meet your needs for an easy and practical garage door addition.

Notwithstanding, we will do our best to give you some realistic price ranges as to what most people will spend. (And remember, these prices are an average and can vary drastically depending on the product, the size and the region)

Occasionally we will have a customer that just wants to buy the garage door kit. Although there are other costs involved with a garage door, there are people who like to buy and install the garage door themselves. Therefore the expected price range is as follows (keep in mind these price ranges do not include shipping and GST).
